Light based installation piece
Textile, wool, string, latex, flickering lights
2017 - Ongoing

“Incubation Chamber is a piece based upon my experiences of the feelings of life/death/rebirth.
I was given the opportunity to chose a specific location to site the piece, so decided to select a dark, uncomfortable, disused space with peeling paint and cracking walls. The space felt like it was speaking of some of the qualities I was wishing to express in my work.
The corridor dark and lit with flickering lights set the scene leading the viewer on a journey into the space.

Cocoons with a low flickering light radiating out from inside them form a focal point for the piece.

The piece is my way of speaking of life birthing despite, difficulty and struggle.
Making comment that even in the most difficult of circumstances, even though life has felt painful, difficult and the world/my body a hostile place. Even when I have felt lost, broken and scarred, light and life has had the ability to shine through and reemerge.

I chose not to make my forms representative of the human figure. The cocoons could be host to any organism/being and that organisms ability to endure, evolve and rebirth regardless of the circumstances it has found itself up against.

I was aiming to create a piece that spoke of both darkness and light and I feel that I was successful in achieving this.” Jo Holt 2018

Incubation Chamber exhibited at Landmark Arts Centre, Teddington, Surrey 2018

“The mood of the piece was dramatically altered in the light and space of the amazing Grade 2 listed Landmark Arts Centre. I quadrupuled the work in size and altered aspects of the piece to make it stand out. I wanted it to now feel as though it had organically formed within what used to be the pulpit of this atmospheric space, which was once the church of St Alban The Martyr.” Jo Holt

Installing the piece at Landmark Arts Centre 2018

“I thoroghly enjoyed working in liason with the Landmark Arts Centre staff and Surrey Sculpture Society Exhibition organisers and Curator to plan, organise and execute the installation of my work withi the pulpit, ensuring health and safety. It was so high that it required 2 ladders to climb into the space. I loved it so much and am really, really looking forward to producing more site specific works in the furture.“ Jo Holt
